5 Myths About Personal Privacy

Technology evolves, laws evolve, but somehow our understanding of personal privacy often stays the same. At Data Action, we aim to change that, one step at a time.

1. “If I reject cookies, I won’t be able to use the service.”
Not true. Rejecting cookies today usually means declining only “non-essential” cookies, mostly used for advertising. Accepting cookies allows companies to track your browsing patterns, link data from social media accounts, and share it with “partners.” Essential cookies are necessary for the website to function. Exceptions exist but are rare.

2. “I have nothing to hide.”
This is a misleading narrative. Why should anyone have access to your personal information that you’re not comfortable sharing? Privacy isn’t about hiding something, it’s about control over your personal space and having a basic human right respected.

3. “Default settings protect me.”
Not exactly. Tech companies often design defaults to maximize data collection, automatically signing users in and sharing as much information as possible. Defaults rarely work in your favor.

4. “What I write in AI chats such as ChatGPT stays private.”
Not guaranteed. Chat platforms may store, analyze, or use messages for moderation, AI training, marketing, or legal compliance. Unencrypted chats should always be treated as potentially accessible. Recently, private ChatGPT conversations were even temporarily searchable on Google.

5. “Full privacy is impossible, so why bother?”
Privacy is about reducing risk, not achieving perfection. Even small steps matter, think of it like exercising for five minutes versus not at all. Strong, unique passwords, decentralization, minimizing data sharing, encrypted messaging, and careful selection of services all make a difference.

Bottom line:
Small steps matter. The more control you have over what you share, the less power others have to misuse your information or influence you in ways that don’t serve your interests.
